In Quran, the form of الْفُجُور translates to al-fitan. In Urdu, this word means "the plague". This is a metaphor for the affliction that God has sent upon disbelievers. The connotation of al fitan in English is "a moral calamity or spiritual malady." A second meaning of fitna in Arabic translates to a trial or tribulation. The Quran says, "And they test you by subjecting you to grief and hardship so that you may emerge with benevolence from Allah's grace" (Al-Quran 29:2). In other words, trials are meant to strengthen us and make us more resilient. The Quran says, "And we tested those who were before them; and upon those who were after them. Allah is able to do all things" (Al-Quran 20:47) The Prophet Muhammad said, "Allah asks me about a person who has good character but commits a sin. He then asks me about the person who has bad character but has never committed a sin. I say that Allah asks about the person who has good character and does not commit sins."Allah created Adam and Eve and asked them: "Will you not ward off from yourselves the evil?" They again responded: "We would except for you." He said, "I fear that you may be overwhelmed by fitnah. Would you not ward it off from yourselves?" They again responded, "We would except for you." He said, "I fear that you may get overwhelmed by a trial. Would you not ward it off from yourselves?" They replied, "What trial could be worse than the one in which Allah has put us? We shall ward it off from ourselves." He then created the jinn and commanded them to show the people their descendants. When they did, Adam and his wife cried: "Allah's curse is upon us! We lied when we said we would save ourselves," (Quran 2:27). The word fitnah is used to mean a trial, affliction and tribulation: The Quran says: "But whoever comes with a good deed will gain tenfold, and they will be saved from the greatest of afflictions; and Allah is most forgiving and merciful" (Al-Quran 2:21). It further says: "And if we had conveyed the Qur'an to them by means of a non-Arabic speaker, they would have said, ‘Why has this been sent down in non-Arabic while there are Arabs among us who are familiar with Arabic?’" (Al-Quran 26:195).
